Breast Cancer Myths ? Two Myths To Watch Out For

It is important to guard yourself against myths related to something as dangerous as breast cancer. Just make sure you do not fall for these commonly used myths about this disease.

Breast cancer occurs only in old women

This used to be the trend for a very long time. However, the causes of breast cancer are not clearly known and this is the reason it is impossible to firmly conclude that this illness is prevalent in old women only. Women who cross 30 are advised to get checked regularly. The risk increases drastically during menopause but one cannot be too cautious when dealing with something as dangerous as breast cancer. Since all it takes is a regular mammogram to keep the problem under control, it does not matter whether you are young or old. Find the problem early and you can tackle it a lot faster.

Breast cancer will always result in death

This myth became popular simply because of our lack of awareness about breast cancer. Many people got treated for some other disease when they ought to be treated for this cancer. Well, better research and more knowledge about this disease means that the fatality rate is not as high as it was in the past. A malignant cancer is a high risk affair but it does not mean certain death. A benign cancer can be taken care off without removal of the breast. Hence, do not attach too much fear with this disease because it is not a certain killer like AIDS.

Yes it happened. Sometimes some things are not under our control. Cancer is a deadly disease. It might not be cured completely, or it might. But the trauma that it leaves behind affects everyone. Strength of the mind is a phrase that could belittle the character shown by people during these tough times. Cancer patients go through hell. And there’s no denying that.

The saddest part is that people who haven’t smoked a cigarette in their lives get it. They look up to the heavens and ask why. Why me? Is it a passage into something else? Cancer has to find a cure. Malignant cells are the basic unit of our life system. Cells are by their structure miniscule and hard to manage. When something of this magnitude happens to it, the effects are fatal.

Yet it happened. Cancer happened. We must swallow the reality. We must support the victims. We must dissolve our emotions and seek cosmic help. Help from the transient universe. Help from the concept-makers of creation. Help from the spirit within. To carry on the support. To up hold dying moments, and embrace them to the fullest.

We all wish that such a disease was not present. How common it is, and yet there is not effective cure. We have found cures for so many diseases, but not cancer. Cancer institutes, research centers and the likes toil endlessly trying to find a shimmer of hope through the microscope.

Hope is the last one to die. To kive without hope is not to live at all. There would come a day when an effective cure for cancer would be developed. Let’s pray.

Surviving Treatment to Treatment

Cancer. The very word can make one shudder. The thought of having that demon in your body somewhere is a paralyzing idea. We would be hard pressed to speak to someone who has not been touched by cancer in their lives at some time, and unfortunately many, many people who are experiencing the disease first hand. No matter where the cancer decides to attack, the treatments are difficult at best. Once the patient hears the word “cancer” a whole new life cycle begins. A cycle that consists of doctors, hospitals, consultations, treatments and tests, and tests, and more treatments, and more tests, and hopefully somewhere down the line, success in treatment.

While the medical community is working feverishly to combat cancer, what they have to offer is treatment. It has been said by some cancer patients that the treatment is sometimes worse than the disease. It is very difficult to see an ending, at least a happy ending. We are in an age where our technology is second to none. There are new treatments and new studies coming out daily. These studies are encouraging and give hope to groups of people who desperately need it.

Surviving the treatments is an art form within itself. There is nothing you can do about your hair falling out, or the fact that after a treatment you feel as though you are throwing up your toenail polish. However, there are ways to help you through. Physicians can offer you pain medication, as cancer can sometimes be unbearably painful. The doctors can also help you with the nausea, there are medications for that as well. Getting a lot of rest during treatments and keeping your body as healthy as possible are ways that the patient can help their own bodies on the road to recovery. The strides made in cancer research are amazing, but the true heroes are those just surviving the ride.

Help Is Here

A diagnosis of cancer is devastating. Hearing those words will be one of the scariest things anyone can hear. A doctor will go into great detail what happens next. It is a lot to digest, and some people cannot process it. So they do the research. There are hundreds of books on cancer and its treatment, hundreds more on survival stories and how each person deals with it, and yet hundreds more on faith healing, herbal treatments and home grown remedies.

What is the right thing to do? Whom do you trust? In the cancer world, unfortunately, it is hit and miss, with no cure currently available. There are so many options, and hopefully with the proper doctor and proper research, the right treatment will come. The treatment that will make you a lot sicker before it makes your better, but in the long run, send you on the road to remission, where cancer takes a break and leaves you to get back to the business of living.

The good news is that there are support groups out there. If you google search “cancer support groups” on the Internet you will see over nine million places to look. There are support groups that are made up of cancer survivors, people who share their own stories of the fight. There are cancer support groups made up of psychologists trained in helping you deal with the daunting task of living with this monstrous disease. There is probably more advice out there than you want to hear. Remember, knowledge is power. If you are fighting cancer you need all the power you can muster. At a time when you may feel completely out of control, being able to chose the path of your treatment is important. Being informed and talking to the right people, learning as much as you can about your disease, will enable you to take control, to make the best decision for you.

A diagnosis of cancer is upsetting, to say the least. You hear the diagnosis, go to the doctor and do all the things you have to do to fight the disease. You set up your treatments, prepare yourself and your family for the fight ahead. You do all the research, get a second opinion, check with insurance and get ready for the marathon, because fighting cancer is no sprint. It is indeed a long, and sometimes very difficult, road. Armed with a goal of restoring your health, you do what needs to be done.

There are the obvious things you need to do. Starting treatments, whether it be radiation or chemotherapy is a feat in itself. The treatments are grueling and take a very heavy toll on the body and soul. Throughout this time you also have to try and keep your spirits up, convincing yourself daily that the assault on your body and mind are worth it, you will come out the other side of this tunnel healthy.

One more soldier to add to your army is your choice of foods. The current research has shown that beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and beta-carotene are all varities of carotenoids. They act as anti-oxidants, which protect cells from free radicals, which are substances that break down cell membranes, allowing cancer to take hold. Carotenoids are also the pigments that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant yellow, orange and green color. So take a trip to the grocery store and shop for those brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Not only do they look good, they are delicious. There are some many different ways you can eat them, and there is a lot of variety, which is very important when you feel you cannot eat anything due to side effects from cancer treatments. Having plenty of choices at your fingertips will make it easier for you to do even a little to help you stay healthy.

The Think System

Cancer has been diagnosed. Your head is spinning, what with caustic treatments, insurance issues and just the thought of having to change your life completely to deal with cancer. You are immediately put on the medicine track. You are being sent to the proper cancer doctors, getting a more precise diagnose and planning a treatment course to fight the monster known as cancer. You know there is going to be a fight. You know there are times when you think you may not win. You are determined to make sure that you do win. You do everything the doctors tell you. You go to every treatment, take every pill, lose every hair, start to get sick regularly, and begin to feel the fight cannot be won.

It is just as important to believe that you can win the fight as it is to fight the fight itself. There are times in every cancer treatment, when you cannot get out of bed you are so sick, when you cannot see a light at the end of the tunnel. You have to believe there is one. Unfortunately there is no magic pill for that. There is no one and nothing that will make you believe you are going to win the fight. That comes from within.

There is a growing movement that meditation can help. Placing your mind in a state of less chaos, a state of more control over things and channeling your inner energy to helping the treatments work for you, or even just talking yourself out of being so sick, can work wonders for your emotional well being during these difficult times. The medicine is an important part of your treatment. Your body needs help to fight this aggressive disease. Your mind needs help to. You may have to convince yourself every single day to get up and fight and meditation just might be that help you need to stay on track.

Blueberries and Chemotherapy

Once cancer is diagnosed, you and your physician will decide on the best treatment for you. Treatment can range from strong medications, with strong side effects, to caustic chemotherapy drugs and radiation. It is said that fighting cancer is a marathon, not a sprint. The fight is long and hard, and you need all of your strength and a pristine mental attitude to run the marathon. Anyone who runs a marathon knows that the preparation is as important as the race itself. There are many things you can do to help your body handle the rigors of cancer treatment. Obviously if you smoke, quit, if you drink, stop and if you have any other vices that can harm your body, do everything you can to get rid of them. Get enough sleep, exercise when you can. All of these things will help your body help you.

One of the most important things you can do is to eat right. Giving your body the proper fuel to fight the disease is very important. Cancer treatments can make you sick, as the drugs are very powerful and they are working hard to rid your body of the cancer cells. Unfortunately at the same time, they are also attacking good cells, cells you need to help you get better. There have been foods that have been noted to have “cancer fighting properties.” One of those foods is blueberries.

Blueberries contain an antioxidant called anthocyanin, which research is showing can prevent cancer cells from forming as a prevention, and also stop or inhibit the rapid growth of cancer cells. Research has shown that blueberries can prevent and shrink cancer tumors, and have been known to kill the cells in triple-negative breast cancer, a very aggressive form of breast cancer.

Blueberries are a delicious fruit. They are rich in color and flavor, fat free and low in sugar. What a great way to take charge of your marathon.

Fighting The Good Fight

Is there such a thing as a good fight? How can the word “good” be associated with the word cancer? Cancer is not good, it is anything but good, it is the antithesis of good. But good can be found. There are good doctors who help you with your fight against this disease. There are good hospitals and treatment centers, who are devoted to making your journey as easy as possible. Thank Heaven there are good medicines. They are powerful, and they can make cancer patients very sick, but they are killing off the cancer cells and helping to eventually make the cancer patient healthy. There are lots of good people. People who will come and help with your family during your aggressive and sometimes debilitating treatment. Meals will be delivered, houses will be cleaned, children will be chauffeured around town, because all of these good people know you need to concentrate on your treatment.

Cancer patients are not alone. Unfortunately there are millions of people fighting cancer every day. There are people who have won, the survivors. They can help in ways you probably did not think about. Talking to someone who has gone down the same path, experienced the same events and symptoms, hearing how they came through the fight, can do wonders for your mindset and help you to not give up and keep fighting.

There are also some good home remedies, such as eating a few crackers to fight nausea, and keeping your skin well hydrated to fend off eczema and dry skin from chemotherapy treatments. Some of these little remedies can make the difficult road known as chemotherapy a little less bumpy. Being prepared, being ahead of the side effects, can help you keep your body and mind in better shape for battle. When giving up is not an option for you, fighting the good fight is essential.
