Cancer is an ugly word because it is one of the leading causes of death since it killed many people each year. There are at least 12 different types of cancer by the body system. The 12 types of body system is blood cancer, bone cancer, brain cancer, breast cancer, digestive/gastrointestinal cancer, endocrine cancer, eye cancer, genitourinary cancers, gynecologic cancers, neck and head cancers, respiratory cancers, and skin cancers. However, skin cancer is the most common type among men, women, and more young people since there are some that are “sun worshippers” in order to get a tan. At least over one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year.

The common types of cancer is the bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, kidney cancer (renal cell), leukemia, lung cancer, melanoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and thyroid cancer.

The bad news about cancer is that it affects every organ of the body despite where it originated from. For instance, if there is cervical cancer that is spread to the lung, it is not called lung cancer. It is still called cervical cancer.

The first one is blood cancer. There are four types which is leukemia, lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma, and Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia. Leukemia or lymphomas are the two cancers that are formed when the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets become cancerous.

Bone cancer affects primarily on children and teens even though it also affects adults. It is a rare form of cancer. There are different types of bone cancer but the two most common types are Ewing’s sarcoma and osteosarcoma.

We know about the dangers of smoking either a cigar or cigarette can have a devastating impact on our health. However, kids need to learn from adults that smoking is not cool nor is it a good idea. Studies show that when kids start smoking at a young age, they have a greater chance of getting addicted to the nicotine until the day they die. We want to prevent that to ever happen to the younger generation because they are our future.

First of all, if you are currently smoking, the best way to protect them is to try to quit smoking. And yes. It is hard but by using the kids as the reason why can help motivate you to be a better person. In most cases, they learn to smoke by seeing their parents or adults that do. And kids see everything and copy what the parents do especially when they do not know any better. And the sad fact is that most of them will end up smoking one before they turn 18. And as parents, it is best to be their teacher in order to educate them the dangers of cigarettes.

How to educate kids the dangers of smoking is to show them some materials such as pictures, information from some reliable sources and some people f succeed or the kids to talk to that is able to quit smoking. Sometimes, some people needed input from others in order to be more effective and not just hearing it from parents. Unfortunately, peer pressure from others can convince someone to get started by smoking and that’s how some teens get started with smoking cigarettes. Have some pictures out on your computer and ask them what they think about it. By asking them questions about it, you are able to gauge on whether they know to start smoking or not.

And as parents, you are their teacher and it is your job to protect and educate them of what not to do such as smoking. If your kid is not interested in smoking, you are doing great.

Sometimes, life do hand us some lemons which we can either dwell on the situation or do something about it. And every single day, someone is bound to get some form of cancer. We can control some of them and each and every day, someone is able to beat it which is due to having some encouragement and having a sense of humor in life. Here are some suggestions on how you or someone you know can beat the system too.

What you can do is to change the current lifestyle that you are living now. If you are unhealthy and you know you are, there is no way to hide from it. If you keep denying that it’s not why you are having cancer, you or someone you know will never get rid of it.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of death which is due to being addicted to the nicotine. And as long as you or someone keeps smoking it, your mortality will be cut shorter. Secondhand smoke is another way to kill someone because they are inhaling the nicotine that a smoker blows out. It affects kids and senior people more than the adults since their health is more frail.

If you eat to live, then you are on to something. It is important to also eat and drink the right kind of stuff because they do affect your health. What to eat are fruits, veggies, whole grain products, some soy products, and lean meat such as chicken and turkey. What to avoid is high fat meat such as sausages, desserts with partially hydrogenated oils, trans fat, and hydrogenated oils. If you consume them as a long term diet, they can cause cancer and other diseases in the system.

Cancer does not discriminate whether you are rich, poor, nor is a single parent. What matters most is to change your unhealthy lifestyle in order to improve your life and to decrease your mortality rate. If you needed some more ideas, there are different sources to learn more about.

Skin cancer is one of the leading causes of death since the look of getting a tanned skin is attractive. It is shown in magazines and online resources that the look is “in” despite getting too much sun exposure could increase the risk of getting skin cancer. Unfortunately, it is one of those silent deaths that happen no matter how old you are. At one time, a magazine called “Cosmopolitan” did an expose about a young woman who died of it at the age of 26. She was addicted to using the tanning booth which causes an early death.

Kids learn from their parents so it is important to teach them the proper way to protect themselves; such as using a sunscreen, wear a hat that covers the face and neck, and sunglasses. The sunglasses should have lens that are UV protected in order to decrease the chances of getting an eye cancer or other eye problems later on down the road.

When it comes to sunscreen, it should be at least SPF 15 or higher because anything lower than that is not effective against the UV rays. Look out for the ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide since they protect you from the UVB rays. But for the UVA rays, look for benzoophenones, oxybenzone, dioxybenzone and avobenzone since they absorb them. Look for the ones that would protect you from UVA and UVB rays which can cause skin damage for long term exposure without any of the two protections. There are sunscreens that you can get without any parabens which costs more than the cheaper version. And studies show that parabens do cause skin cancer due to the chemicals when you apply them to the skin.

Burt’s Bees, Vivesana and Coolibar are a couple of the companies that offer paraben free sunscreens. You can get them either by ordering online or at your local beauty and drug stores. However, it is also a good idea to find the ones that are waterproof since you would be sweating as well. It should be easily washable too.

The safe and secure world of a child’s home can suddenly become unpredictable and scary when a parent is diagnosed with and begins to battle cancer. Kids are very in tune with moods and feelings, they can sense stress in the family quickly and often become worried. It is important to talk with them about cancer, give them age-appropriate information and tell them how many people battle cancer and survive. Imagined fears are very often far worse than the reality.

There are a few things to be sure and do when talking to the kids about a parent’s cancer diagnosis. These things can be of help and hopefully make the situation a little less scary for all.

•Use the word ‘cancer’ to explain the illness, and tell where the cancer is located.
•Encourage questions but do not force the issue. Have meals together, spend time watching movies or playing games, limit visitors and phone calls in order to focus on the family. Doing these things will create a relaxed atmosphere in which kids may feel more comfortable about talking and asking questions.
•Let them know what to expect by explaining treatments and discussing how the parent may feel or act during treatments.
•Be sure all the kids know who will take care of them and the family’s life if a parent is hospitalized or too sick to carry on with daily activities.
•Plan activities away from the house with friends and family members on days when the sick parent is having a hard time.

Handling a tough challenge such as cancer together as a family is a hard battle, but will draw everyone closer and compassion is learned firsthand. Nobody would choose such, but since cancer is not a choice, it will best help the kids to have a positive attitude and go forth.

There are so many misconceptions and myths about the treatment of cancer. These myths are confusing and sometimes even scary. Battling a disease such as cancer is tough enough without having to deal with outrageous misconceptions and worries. Researching and learning the truth for oneself is the best way to become knowledgeable about the disease and treatments in order to make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary fears.

One of the most commonly discussed myths about cancer is that a true positive attitude is all that is needed to survive cancer. In reality, there is zero proof that any attitude has any effect at all on the cancer whatsoever. That being said, a positive and upbeat attitude can help the patient in day to day life by helping them to stay in touch with family and friends, to stay active and find the strength to deal with all that comes with fighting cancer.

Another popular misconception surrounding cancer treatment is that drug companies and the FDA are withholding or slowing down the release of new cancer treatments. This is completely untrue, as doctors and the FDA are on the patient’s side when it comes to fighting cancer. The scientific studies that must be done to determine the safety and effectiveness of new drugs and treatments take a lot of time and sometimes must be done again and again.

Undergoing treatment for cancer does not necessarily mean leaving home and traveling to a specialty medical center. While going to such specialized places is an option, often those specialists can work with the patient’s hometown doctors to set up treatment and care locally. This enables the cancer patient to go about life as usual as much as possible. By participating in daily life with family and friends, even working when feeling like it, many people are encouraged by their loved ones and energized by normal activities. These positive feelings can only help the patient feel good as much as possible.

Having cancer is a challenge, to say the least. One of the most disturbing components on a patient’s cancer journey, is the crushing and debilitating fatigue that it brings. Although fatigue can be attributed to the disease itself, it is also a common side effect of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Although cancer fatigue can be ongoing, there are certain things that the cancer patient can do to help reduce the severity and frequency of cancer fatigue.

One of the most important things that a cancer patient can do to beat cancer fatigue is to eat right. Consuming a healthy diet during cancer treatments is not always an option for patients, however, it is very important that the patient keep up his strength and consume essential vitamins and nutrients. Eating well, promotes a feeling a well being, and is an essential component in the healing process.

Another way to beat cancer fatigue is with mild exercise. Again, exercising when not feeling well is not easy, however, mild exercise can prevent muscles from becoming atrophied, and can restore energy. In addition, cancer patients who exercise can relieve anxiety and depression. These feelings are common after a cancer diagnosis, however, exercising can eliminate some of these feelings by releasing “feel good” chemicals in the brain. Patients need to always remember to check with their health care provider before embarking on an exercise program.

Perhaps the most beneficial thing a cancer patient can do to beat cancer fatigue is to get enough recuperative sleep. This can sometimes be difficult, especially when patients have households, family and jobs to consider, however, it is vital. Getting enough sleep is energizing, and prepares the patient to better handle challenges and treatments. Without adequate sleep, the immune system does not function properly, leaving the patient more fatigued, and more susceptible to further illness and infection.

When cancer patients experience fatigue, the causes can be many. Treatments and other medications can deplete the body of vital nutrients, including vitamins. In addition, treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation may make patients ill and cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. This, in turn can cause the patient to acquire a vitamin deficiency. When patients lose vial nutrients, fatigue worsens, and can sometimes become debilitating.

Vitamins such as Vitamin C and Vitamin D are important in the healing process. Vitamin C also aids in wound healing and cellular regeneration. Both of these nutrients can restore energy and promote a feeling of well being in the patient. In addition, essential vitamins can increase the appetite and restore eating. When cancer patients are malnourished, they can experience crushing fatigue and weakness. By stimulating their appetite and improving oral intake, they can begin to feel stronger and more energized.

Although vitamin supplementation can be an important factor in relieving cancer related fatigue, it is important for the patient to discuss this option with their health care providers. Vitamin and mineral supplementation may interfere with certain medications and even skew some types of blood tests. If taking vitamin supplements are contraindicated, patients can increase their levels of essential vitamins by eating foods that are rich in that certain vitamin. For example, increasing their intake of orange juice and other fruits can boost Vitamin C intake, while increasing their increase of dairy products, patients can increase Vitamin D intake. If eating daily is not recommended for the patient, or not tolerable, spending 15 minutes in the sun everyday, can significantly boost levels of Vitamin D.

By taking vitamin supplements or eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, patients can boost immunity and relieve some of their fatigue. Vitamin supplementation can give patients just the right edge they need to continue fighting their disease with energy and a renewed enthusiasm.

When patients are undergoing cancer treatments, it is vitally important that they keep up their strength by healthy a healthy diet and avoiding excess fatigue. It is common, however, for chemotherapy patients to have a less than robust appetite, while they are undergoing treatment. By not eating right, patients often endure increasing fatigue, weakness, and depression. It is important to do everything possible to increase oral intake, because by doing so, the healing process takes hold.

Patients need not suffer from poor appetite during cancer treatment. It is important for the patient to ask their doctor to recommend a treatment plan that will resurrect their appetite and make them stronger. One of the possible components to this treatment plan is medication. There are certain prescription medications that stimulate the appetite. One such medication is called Megace. This medication, when taken as directed can greatly increase the appetite and reverse cancer fatigue. In addition, the increased food intake better allows the patient to respond to chemotherapy and radiation by improving mental function, digestion and nerve function.

Megace is not without side effects however. If a patient experiences adverse reaction from the medication, the physician can offer an alternative medication. In addition, vitamin supplements can significantly increase a person’s appetite and increase energy. Of course, if the patient is still unable to adequately maintain a healthy diet, the health care provider can recommend an oral supplement such as Ensure or Boost. These liquid supplements are chocked full of vital nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These supplements can literally pump renewed vigor and energy into those that take them. Nutritional supplements such as these also are available in a variety of mild flavors such as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. Many cancer patients will find that taking a can of one of these supplements is an acceptable substitution for a well rounded meal.

Having cancer and withstanding treatments can zap energy, cause profound fatigue and promote feelings of helplessness. Research is emerging that by having a pet, cancer patients can dramatically increase their energy levels and restore vitality and hope. Pet ownership has many benefits to the cancer patient that include companionship. When patients experience loneliness, they may become more hopeless and more fatigued. The presence of a pet can renew a more positive environment and even give the patient a healthier appetite.

Owning a pet means that the owner will need to take care of it. This means focusing on care giving to another being, while taking some of the focus off their own needs for a while. This can sometimes provide welcome relieve from their troubles, while focusing on the needs of their animals. In addition, owning a dog almost always means that the dog will need walks. If the patient is able, walking their dog is an excellent way for them to get mild exercise and reduce fatigue – a situation beneficial for both pet and pet owner.

The compassion and companionship that pets provide is valuable to the patient. When people are in contact with their pets, actual physiologic changes can take place. These changes can include lowered blood pressure and lower respiratory levels, while evoking a feeling of calmness, serenity and peacefulness. These changes can also result in a reversal of fatigue and lack of energy. Playing with a pet, can bring enjoyment to a cancer patient as well. Playing fetch with a dog out in the fresh air can do wonders for the respiratory system, as well as for the muscles. In addition, when patients exercise, their digestion improves. Sluggish digestion can cause fatigue and add to exhaustion. Having a pet makes the patient feel needed, reduces loneliness and gives them a feeling a purpose, both extremely important components in the healing process.
